         Documentary Review AND
               Video Edit Analysis
Straight Outta L.A. - Ice Cube

The Definition of Documentary is a video file that consist facts supported by evidence and witness conveying a message or moral for the audience. Documentary is not any different then any other literature essay format other than it’s a video with voice instead of written words. It starts off with a general info which is designed in a format that would make audience excited and it keeps a smooth pace of interest throughout the video and ends with a moral for the audience to learn after looking at evidence and listening to witnesses. However, this article is a review from an art student breaking down the documentary into details explaining how much role ‘good editing’ plays in making a documentary seem fascinating.

For instance, why don’t the kids these days watch old epic, well written movies? The reason is because the way movies are editing these days with effect and all are just cooler for kids to enjoy. The documentary by Ice Cube, a N.W.A (Niggahs Wid Attitudes) rapper, has been a success due to the interest it builds up as the audience watches it. It is about the link between Raiders (A Football League) and N.W.A (A Rap Gang). However, they really show that connection very well using all the techniques available to get their message across. Ice Cube directed it and the unique thing about this documentary is that he is actually in it as the host as well. As of normal documentaries, directors or producers do not really play a role in the video themselves. Right on the start it shows Mr. Cube and Snoop Dogg just chit chatting about Raiders and their unique outfit, talking about how piraty attitudes they had, talking about attitudes then brings in the most popular rap gang back in those days called N.W.A.(Niggahs Wid Attitudes). He also chooses a football stadium to host his chit chat which makes it seem more outgoing then a boring background. They show present day clips of the interview with the Raider’s players (1980s) and the video shows them back in 80’s and description on how good the team was. On the other hand, they talk about N.W.A and how Ice Cube use to rap with the gang before when they were only teenagers rapping about ‘Compton’ with Raiders gears. They only show the interviewer for few seconds and goes to next one which keeps a good flow of different people’s opinions and keeps it seem rich of information for the audience to stick to his seat. Everything the players talk about has its own B-Roll to support it with for the audience to understand better. They then bring in the main subject of the documentary, how Raiders and N.W.A were married to each other. The gang N.W.A. made Raiders more official to L.A. then any other, stated by Raiders football player. After sometime with these facts comes in the title of the documentary, ‘Straight Outta L.A. – Ice Cube’. Beyond that, they bring in the ultimate Coach of Raiders, Al Davis, during 1980’s and he gives a description of Raiders. He gives a quote about their general theme, “You believe in what you believe in, sticking up for your rights. Do it your way, don’t let the culture tell you what to do.” The down side of this documentary is that, Ice Cube should have arranged some make up for Al Davis, just so Mr. Lobb doesn’t have to pause the documentary to show what alcohol does to one’s body. Carrying on after that, just so audience don’t get bored of watching people talking in the video and Al Davis’ disaster, they bring in a different way to keep audiences mind in the documentary by bringing in cartoon animation. Skipping forward a bit, they show the excitement audience had after Raiders joined L.A. It covers that every Raiders games had about 90% of Raider fans and the players never disappointed the fans. Gradually they start showing clips of the N.W.A. gang members and Ice T talking about how he rapped about the true life of L.A. so people get an idea that the city is not about lights and girls half naked, it is also about violence to beware of. A bit about the shots and edits, they made photographs from back in those days and turned them into 3-d effects, so the people or thing they are talking about gets embossed from the picture and slides towards the camera which is pretty awesome. They make use of all the technology there is available in today’s date. They also show the sunrise and how the football stadium reveals as sun rises. Talking about ‘sunrise’, this documentary so far shows every bit of the rise of Raiders in people’s eyes and making them proud by winning Super Bowl and become Champions. After that, it shows how N.W.A. rose up and people started liking rap music now. Just like always, everything that raises quick sets down quickly. So now N.W.A. are accused by F.B.I. for encouraging violence into kids by rapping about it and making them seem cool for what they were doing. The documentary is rich with B-Roll about everything; they then show public asking for freedom from violence and N.W.A. to stop saying all those words that kids get inspired from. A very minor thing but shows how detailed this documentary is if someone had to point out reasons for it to be appealing is when you would notice that the song – Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A. is shown from start till end in this documentary in little clips. However, they don’t just show it for the sake of it but they show the clip as it relates to what they are talking about, specially at the end when F.B.I. is turning against them that is when they show the clip of song when the cops are chasing the gang members and then the next clip says, “that’s the way it goes in the city of Compton, boy.” That is where they end the song and start on with linking Raiders and N.W.A. together and how they both raised up together and fell together from L.A. The other thing that is unique about this documentary is that the director Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg are chat chatting and are throwing football around and that keeps some entertainment along with the message of the documentary. They also have interviewees from marketing sport wears and shows how much profit Raiders made them and then how other teams copied their uniform. Lastly, after all the witnesses and evidence Ice Cube comes in and says at the end. “Blame Al Davis, N.F.L., N.W.A. but Raiders would always belong to L.A.” It then ends with a song dedicated for Raiders and about black and silver colours. Therefore, after adding up all the small things about the documentary together, it made one very successful documentary.

                     Song Analysis
           We're in heaven - Do

"Baby you're all that I want, When you're lying here in my arms, I'm finding it hard to believe, We're in heaven..We’re in heaven..”  by Do aka Dominique.

This alluring song with the most amazing heart touching lyrics is sung by a Dutch singer ‘Do’ short forDominique van Huls’. Her first debut album, simply titled "Do", was released in July 2004.  The track itself was originally released in December 2002.  Do, along with a Radio Commercial producer "Yanou" created this breakout single which was a major Success in UK by Number 1 position, Number 3 in Australia, Number 8 on the US charts and Number 10 everywhere else!  Unfortunately, Do's name was nowhere to be seen on the label which read, instead "Dj Sammy and Yanou" since they released a remix version of Heaven called "Heaven, Yanou's Candlelight Mix".  Therefore, Do could not be as successful as she expected to be after her first release.  Do is still happy about the fact that she gave out her first single which was a complete success yet she still continues to struggle.

The original song is a soft track with the mixture of lyrics and the music of Guitar. The words are sung in such depth that it can literally force tears out of the listener.  The soothing music of the guitar together with the heart touching lyrics is only 4:30 minute long but it brings about the memories of lifetime.  Listening to the track reminds me of my close friend who died  on 12th August, 2009.  The heartening words gives me a flashback of all the precious moments i spent with my bosom buddy.  Music of the guitar has the power to control the emotions and that is the reason why just a touch of soft music of guitar is added to the song.  The song does not have any heavy amount of instrumental music added to it because it drives the attention of the listener from the lyrics to the music more. The song does not only brings tears in the eyes but it makes you feel like you are in Heaven with the person you miss while listening to the song. The song brings a good feeling in the heart since it reminds the listener of the good moments spent and that would always bring a smile on the face knowing that you once had great time with the beloved one and that you have memories forever locked somewhere in your heart that would always keep the dead one alive in your heart.  I always listen to this song when i miss my buddy, this way i can go back in the memories and rejoice the moments and feel good once again.  The song literally makes you want to re-live the Good times once again. Thus, the song is just lyrics sung along with the music of Guitar but yet it leaves a remarkable heart touching influence on the listeners mind.

Therefore, having a lot of memories stung to the song makes it my favourite track. Do's voice is a justice to the track.
